Ah, Valentine's Day - a day of conundrums, abstruseness, and perplexity. For those with a true love it is hardly needed - especially if the 'other' is prone to celebrating the day with gusto.
For others it proves a day of painful reminder - of loves lost, never found or simply of feeling particularly and peculiarly alone or singularly unloved. For still others actually in relationships, it raises anger and hurt for having been forgotten or ignored. It provides either the heights of triumph or the depths of despair when a previously undisclosed love is revealed and provides the desired response or callous rejection.
Perhaps most sinister of all is the devastation revisited . . . the realization that the one you adore above all will never be able to love you.
BTW I am not a cynic - I SO believe in love in all its beauty, fullness and joy. I am simply like so very many others who find themselves year after year sitting amongst the rubble of the world's definition of romance and love, arms full of dead roses and glasses of wine turned to vinegar. Such is life and love.
